In the last decade, there has been a significant decline in the availability of GP antenatal shared care. What was once commonplace in everyday general practice is now vastly diminishing in many clinics across the country. Research into the value GPs provide during the perinatal period is minimal, making it difficult to advocate effectively for policy changes.
We believe that GP involvement in pregnancy care is invaluable because it offers crucial continuity of care for the mother/parent and baby. This care extends beyond the perinatal period and encompasses a holistic, whole-person approach to our patients’ health.
With the help of Associate Professor Jacqueline Frayne and KEMH GP Liaison Dr Sarah Smith, we have designed a multi-component research project with an emphasis on
1) Exploring a patient’s perspective of the GP antenatal shared care model
2) Understanding GPs perspectives on pregnancy related care included shared care and what challenges they are facing
We have also collaborated with GP researchers from other states, and this year, we formed a new National GP Antenatal Research Group. We are working together with multiple states to conduct several large studies. This evidence will be used to support the work currently in motion, led by the RACGP Antenatal special interest group, to advocate for policies that will keep GP antenatal shared care accessible and viable.
We are currently looking for GPs who would be interested in helping with our research. Please click on the flyers below for further details.
