It is a comprehensive assessment that addresses the unique health needs of women. Carried out routinely, these wellness checks are essential for the early detection, prevention, and management of conditions that may impact a woman’s physical, mental, or reproductive health. They typically involve a physical examination with screenings for cervical and breast cancer, and, if needed, for bowel cancer, as this will depend on the age and risk factors.
Some clinics may also offer vision and hearing tests, as well as a bone density scan (DEXA) to assess for osteoporosis. Depending on your age and individual risk factors, these evaluations may include blood work and reproductive health assessments. If needed, we can coordinate referrals to trusted local specialists to support you in making informed decisions about your health and lifestyle.
While the exact age can vary depending on your medical history and other factors, most women are encouraged to begin regular health checks in their early 20s. In Australia, women aged 25 to 74 are advised to undergo cervical screening every five years (if results are normal), with further investigation advised for those with abnormal findings. Breast cancer screening is generally recommended for women between 50 and 74. Routine mammograms are not typically recommended for those in their 40s, as breast cancer is rare in this age group. However, this recommendation may vary depending on the individual’s specific risk factors.
Given that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, regular skin checks are also important, particularly for those with fair skin, significant sun exposure, or a history of sunburn.
The duration of a woman’s wellness checkup can vary from individual to individual, depending on various factors, including your age, medical history, specific health concerns, and the tests required. While a basic check-up might take around 15 to 20 minutes, we recommend setting aside 45 to 60 minutes for your visit so that there’s ample time for a thorough assessment.
According to the 2025 women’s health report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare², the most common issues that cause disease burden across a woman’s life course are as follows:
Women’s mental health is influenced by a complex interplay of emotional, psychological, biological, social, and environmental factors, all of which may contribute to a higher risk of mental health issues. For example, emotional distress and unresolved trauma may lead to anxiety and mood disorders. At the same time, psychological factors such as low self-esteem and negative body image can affect how women feel and cope day to day.
On the other hand, biological factors, like hormone changes during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, can also affect mood and anxiety. In addition, social and environmental issues, including gender-based violence and discrimination, add more pressure, while financial stress or social isolation can make these issues worse.
