Travel Vaccination Clinic in Perth

Travelling abroad can put you at risk of certain diseases, making proper travel health planning essential. Travel vaccinations play a crucial role in protecting travellers against preventable illnesses and serious infections, such as yellow fever. As a trusted travel vaccination clinic in Perth, we offer a comprehensive range of travel vaccinations, along with expert advice, to ensure you stay safe wherever your travels take you.

What Are Travel Vaccinations?

Designed to promote the development of immunity, travel vaccinations work by safely imitating an infection. This triggers the body’s natural defences, allowing your immune system to learn how to defend against the disease without the risks of actually becoming ill. In addition to protecting your health and reducing the spread of disease between countries, some vaccinations are required by law for entry into specific destinations.

You may also face certain travel restrictions if your immunisations aren’t up to date. Travel vaccines should typically be administered several weeks before you leave Australia, as your body needs time to develop full immunity, and some vaccines require multiple doses to be fully effective.

Vaccinations and Travel Health Services Provided at Our Travel Clinic in Perth

Although the required vaccinations and travel health measures you need to take may vary depending on your itinerary and individual needs, it is generally recommended to review your immunisations and ensure that routine vaccines are up to date before travelling.

Common Vaccinations

Main Benefit: Reduces the risk of getting the flu.

Duration of protection: Around 6 months (annual vaccinations are needed).

Time taken to develop immunity: Around 2 weeks.

Main Benefit: Protects against mosquito-borne viral haemorrhagic disease.

Duration of protection: Lifelong protection.

Time taken to develop immunity: Immunity begins to develop in about 10 days, but it takes around 30 days for the majority to have complete protection.

Main Benefit: Protects against a potentially severe liver inflammation caused by the infection and reduces the severity of symptoms.

Duration of protection: The first dose provides protection for about one year, with the second dose offering immunity that lasts for around 25 years (and sometimes even longer).

Time taken to develop immunity: While a single dose provides initial protection within two to four weeks, the second dose offers long-term immunity.

Main Benefit: This vaccine is highly effective in preventing the development of the chronic infection that can lead to liver cancer¹ (hepatocellular carcinoma). It is also considered the world’s first cancer-preventive vaccination.

Duration of protection: Likely life-long (3 doses).

Time taken to develop immunity: Many achieve full immunity after the third dose.

Main Benefit: Reduces the risk of contracting cholera (can be life-threatening).

Duration of protection: While the vaccine is believed to offer protection for up to 2 to 3 years, this may vary depending on the type and number of doses administered.

Time taken to develop immunity: It usually takes between 1-2 weeks to develop immunity following the completion of the recommended dosage.

Main Benefit: Protects against the illness and its potentially serious complications.

Duration of protection: Likely life-long (2 doses).

Time taken to develop immunity: Between 4 and 8 weeks.

Main Benefit: Reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation, death, and disease spread.

Duration of protection: Declines after about 3 to 6 months.

Time taken to develop immunity: While the initial vaccination requires several weeks for full immune protection, booster doses in previously vaccinated individuals work more rapidly, typically in about 10 days.

Main Benefit: Builds immunity against the Japanese encephalitis virus and reduces the risk of subsequent serious complications that can result from the illness.

Duration of protection: This will vary depending on the type of vaccine and dosage given (2-dose primary series – standard/accelerated schedule, with booster if indicated).

Time taken to develop immunity: Around 1-2 weeks after completing the primary vaccination series.

Main Benefit: Reduces the risk of contracting meningococcal disease and the spread of the disease (herd immunity).

Duration of protection: This will vary depending on the type of vaccine (multi-dose series) and the age at which it is administered.

Time taken to develop immunity: Around 10-14 days following the vaccination.

Main Benefit: Protects against measles, mumps, and rubella infections, and helps control the spread of disease.

Duration of protection: Usually life-long (2 doses).

Time taken to develop immunity: Immunity develops over 2-3 weeks after the first dose, with the second dose boosting protection for those who did not respond fully initially.

Main Benefit: Protects against potentially fatal bacterial infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis and reduces the risk of developing complications that can result from severe pneumococcal disease.

Duration of protection: This will vary depending on the type of vaccine and the age and medical condition of the individual.

Time taken to develop immunity: While it typically takes around 2-3 weeks post-vaccination for antibodies to form, this process may take longer in individuals who are immunocompromised.

Main Benefit: Minimises the risk of severe, life-threatening complications that can result from polio, such as paralysis and reduces the rate of disease spread. It has also contributed to the eradication of the virus in most parts of the world.

Duration of protection: Likely long-term; the dosage will depend on the individual’s age, health condition, vaccination history, and potential risk of exposure to the virus.

Time taken to develop immunity: Protection from the vaccine increases with each dose (primary series of 3 doses), with the full 4-dose series providing sustained immunity (recommended for kids). An accelerated schedule can be used for those travelling to an endemic country where exposure is imminent.

Main Benefit: Protects against rabies (almost always fatal once symptoms appear).

Duration of protection: This will vary depending on the type of vaccination given (pre-exposure/post-exposure) and the person’s health condition.

Time taken to develop immunity: For those not previously vaccinated, protective antibodies typically develop within 7 to 14 days, but it is important to note that post-exposure treatment is time-sensitive and highly effective when administered promptly.

Main Benefit: Protects against three potentially life-threatening bacterial infections (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) that can cause severe complications.

Duration of protection: Declines over time, requiring multiple doses and booster shots.

Time taken to develop immunity: It takes around 2 to 4 weeks to develop immunity after vaccination, with infants needing the full primary series.

Main Benefit: Reduces the risk of contracting typhoid fever and protects against serious complications that can result from the disease.

Duration of protection: This will vary depending on the type of vaccine needed.

Time taken to develop immunity: This will also vary depending on the type of vaccine administered.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can a GP administer my travel vaccines?

Yes. With extensive experience in providing travel vaccinations to numerous patients over the years, our GPs can advise on and administer the necessary vaccines for safe travel.

2. Do I need proof of vaccination to enter certain countries?

Yes. Some countries require proof of vaccination against specific infectious diseases before you can legally enter that country.

3. Can I get all my travel vaccines at once?

While it is generally safe to receive multiple vaccinations during one visit, certain vaccines, such as MMR and Varicella, may need to be spaced at least 4 weeks apart.

4. Do vaccinations have any side effects?

Yes. While vaccines are designed to protect against diseases and build immunity, certain side effects may occur. However, the majority of side effects are usually mild and temporary.

5. Are travel vaccines safe to administer during pregnancy?

While most live vaccines aren’t recommended during pregnancy, some may be considered if the benefits outweigh the risks. Non-live vaccines, on the other hand, are generally regarded as safe.
